Not lost in translation!
The long road from
English to Tamil and Urdu
We have been preparing v2
for translation into several languages. It has meant rearranging
much of the code to make all the text that appears on the screen
easy to export to people who will do the translation. While
doing this we had a request to create a version that would be able
to work in languages that use completely different alphabets or
symbols, languages like those of South Asia -- Tamil, Urdu or
Hindi.
Since modern computer program
languages, like the one in which LineupNX is written, use a system
called 'unicode' the representation of the different language
scripts is not actually that hard. Here is some Tamil on the
LineupNX teleprompter (please don't try to translate -- the text is
a transcription, not translation of an English
text).
But that is only the beginning.
Translation of all the menus and messages comes next. And then the
hard part... how do you do logins and permission levels? What about
file name conventions and directory structures based on days of the
week? Those are the issues we are dealing with now. Some of the
challenges that make this project so
interesting.
